The Importance of Sensor Calibration – SVP
One sensor that doesn't always get the attention it deserves is the Sound Velocity Profiler (SVP).
I've seen situations where everything else in the survey setup was working perfectly—GNSS, motion sensor, heading—but the bathymetry still didn't look right. In many cases, the issue came down to sound velocity.
Since multibeam systems rely on the speed of sound through the water to calculate depth and beam angles, even small errors in the sound velocity profile can affect the quality of the final data. You might notice depth inconsistencies, noisy outer beams, or mismatches between survey lines.
That's why I always treat the SVP as a critical part of the survey spread, not just another sensor. Making sure it's calibrated, well maintained, and collecting representative casts can make a huge difference in the quality of the data.
Good survey results don't happen because of one advanced system—they come from every sensor doing its job accurately.
Sometimes, spending a few extra minutes checking the basics saves hours of data cleaning and rework later.
