🤔 “Aren’t a Surveyor, Survey Engineer, and Data Processor all the same?”

This is one of the most common questions asked by people entering the hydrographic survey industry.

The truth is… they work toward the same goal, but each role has different responsibilities.

🌊 Hydrographic Surveyor

The Surveyor is responsible for collecting accurate data offshore.

Typical responsibilities include:

✅ Operating survey equipment ✅ Monitoring positioning and sensor quality ✅ Performing calibrations and system checks ✅ Ensuring data is collected according to project specifications ✅ Reporting any operational issues during acquisition

⸻

⚙️ Survey Engineer

The Survey Engineer is responsible for making sure the survey systems work correctly.

Typical responsibilities include:

✅ Installing and configuring survey equipment ✅ Integrating sensors and navigation systems ✅ Troubleshooting hardware and software issues ✅ Maintaining survey systems onboard ✅ Supporting mobilization, testing, and demobilization

Without a Survey Engineer, even the best survey team can’t collect reliable data.

⸻

💻 Data Processor

The Data Processor is responsible for turning raw data into reliable deliverables.

Typical responsibilities include:

✅ Applying corrections (SVP, tides, motion, positioning) ✅ Cleaning and validating the data ✅ Performing quality control (QC) ✅ Creating bathymetric surfaces and charts ✅ Delivering final products that clients can trust

Without processing, raw survey data has very little value.

🎯 Think of it this way:

Survey Engineer → Builds and maintains the survey system.

Surveyor → Uses that system to collect accurate data.

🖥️ Data Processor → Converts that data into information engineers can use.

Three different roles.

One successful hydrographic survey.
